the ‘achoo’ moment: self-doubt and the common cold

What’s self-doubt got to do with the common cold?

That’s where it starts for me.

An uneasy sense of there being something wrong.

Of feeling out of sorts.

Of lacking motivation, doubting myself, not feeling as sharp as normal.

And if I’m not careful, it can spiral – I start to worry about feeling like that.

And each time I forget.

Until the ‘aha’ moment.

Or, more accurately, the ‘achoo’ moment.

The first sneeze of my garden variety common cold.

Then it makes sense.

And I’m reminded how our thoughts can lead us astray so easily.

How we can think there’s something wrong with us.

And all the while getting caught up in that worry is just distracting us from noticing what our body is telling us.

Loud and clear, if only we could hear it above our noisy thinking!

So, normality is restored.

Now that I’ve remembered there’s nothing wrong, I can just rest and let the cold pass.

See you on the other side!
