Not long ago, my life felt like it was spiralling out of control.
I felt like I was stuck on the hamster wheel with no option but to keep running.
Running to keep up with the demands of being a mum, wife, daughter, employee and all the other roles that I play at any given moment.
I was constantly doing something yet feeling like I wasn’t doing any of it very well.
I was burnt out, unhappy and I couldn’t remember the last time I’d done anything for myself, had fun or laughed out loud. You know, that laugh that comes from deep inside of you?
My energy was so badly depleted that holidays didn’t even get me back to feeling empty, let alone recharged.
And I’d been doing it for a long time.
The stress and anxiety I was feeling was all consuming and I’d started to feel other physical symptoms of ill health too.
I wasn’t giving the best of me to anyone in my life, but most of all I didn’t feel like me. I couldn’t even remember who ‘me’ was. I knew the roles I played: wife mother daughter employee, weren’t me. But what was? It was such a long time since I’d felt like ‘me’ that I didn’t even know anymore.
What I did know is that there was more to life. I felt like I’d been in touching distance of it before, but never quite reached it.
I’d tried meditation, journaling, yoga, mindfulness, a bookshelf full of self-help books, but it always felt that I was just adding something new to my already too long ‘to-do’ list. I would manage a week, maybe two, then became even more overwhelmed; stopped what I was doing and added a feeling of failure and guilt on the long list of negative thoughts I had about myself.
I felt a failure, I felt like I ‘should’ be able to do it and I was somehow lacking in comparison to everyone else. I felt like somehow, if I really was ‘ok‘, then I would be able to do it too.
My ‘enough is enough’ moment finally came, and, through a friend, I found myself a coach. She coached me in the exact the same way that I now use to coach others.
In a very short period, things began to change. Not in a momentous crash bang kind of way, but in a subtle, certain, deep way.
Nothing on the outside of me changed, but there was deep change inside of me. A change that led me back to the ‘me’ I thought I’d lost a long time ago.
Only this time it felt a much more solid foundation. Gone were the stories I used to tell myself about not being good enough, confident enough or assertive enough.
Gone was the guilt and gone was the feeling that I had no choice but to keep on the treadmill.
So, I stepped off it and trained with internationally renowned life coach & author, Ali Campbell, to learn the skills that had been so effective in changing my own life.
